- Food Policy Applied Practice/Internship Experience

Position Description:
The Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student for
a practicum/internship opportunity focusing on translating complex food safety issues into actionable
and accessible written materials. The practicum student will support the development of case studies on
recent foodborne illness outbreaks, policy briefs, public comments and op-eds that will contribute to
public impact to inform policy. This opportunity would be ideal for a student who is interested in the
intersection of food systems, public health, science communication and policy. Interested candidates
should have strong writing and analytical skills and have a desire to contribute to improve food safety
and public health outcomes through policy engagement. This is an unpaid position and students are
expected to work 120 hours over a 10 – 14 week period. Timing is flexible.
Key Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Research and co-author a case study on a recent US foodborne illness outbreak, including but
not limited to the contributing factors, regulatory responses and policy implications. - Draft and write policy briefs and public comments on key food safety and regulatory topics
while incorporating scientific evidence. - Develop op-ed style pieces intended for public-facing platforms that will highlight timely issues
in food safety and public health.
Qualifications:
- Currently a student in Public Health, Public Policy, Food Systems, Nutrition or a related field.
- Strong desire for research and analytical skills with the ability to obtain information from a
diverse range of sources. - Excellent writing skills
- Interest in food safety, food systems and public health policy.
- Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.
- Familiar with foodborne pathogens, regulatory systems and agencies or food policy.

Position Description:
The Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security (IFSAN) is seeking a motivated student with an
interest in food safety, nutrition, and nutrition security to assist in the development and launch of the
IFSAN monthly newsletter. The student will also have the opportunity to write and share content on
social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and the IFSAN website, pending prior approval.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong enthusiasm for researching relevant topics and a curiosity
about food safety and nutrition security. While residing on campus is not a requirement, the student
must actively engage with the team by attending Zoom meetings and any other necessary gatherings to
support the project. This position offers a chance for students to enhance their practical skills in
thorough research, identifying reliable resources, and translating technical information into more
accessible language. Additionally, students will expand their knowledge and understanding of food
safety, nutrition, and nutrition security. This is an unpaid position, requiring students to commit to 120
hours over a flexible 10 to 14-week period.

- Research current and emerging topics in food safety, nutrition, and nutrition security for web
and social media content - Design infographics and visual content for digital platforms
- Post approved content on IFSAN’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and website
- Attend regular Zoom and project meetings
Qualifications:
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- The ability to work independently
- Strong organization and planning skills
- Prioritize objectives to meet deadlines.
