Research

Research plays an important role in preventing foodborne disease and advancing nutrition security. It provides insights into the trends, root causes, and consequences of foodborne illness and nutrition insecurity. This research is critical to identifying effective intervention strategies that protect public health and promote equitable access to safe, nutritious, and culturally preferred food.

Recognizing this, IFSAN facilitates, encourages, and conducts research that increases our knowledge about foodborne disease and nutrition insecurity, and leads to science-based solutions to these urgent public health challenges. We achieve this by fostering transdisciplinary collaborations across food safety and food systems research, creating a vibrant network of scholars and practitioners, and leveraging these collaborations to address critical research questions. IFSAN also strives to increase the visibility of George Washington University’s food safety and nutrition security research efforts both within the university and among external stakeholders.
